Apple’s iPhone 17 retains a design similar to its predecessor, featuring the same vertical camera module and overall dimensions. Despite its familiar appearance, the device introduces several key improvements that distinguish it from the iPhone 16.
The standard iPhone now includes ProMotion technology, previously reserved for Pro models, offering a smoother 120Hz display. Screen size has increased from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches, delivering a more expansive viewing experience. Peak brightness has also risen, reaching 3,000 nits, up from 2,000 nits in the prior model. A second-generation Ceramic Shield layer is included, which Apple claims improves scratch resistance and reduces glare.
Apple continues to offer a range of colors, including lavender, sage, mist blue, black, and white. The Pro variant introduces a bright orange option, although the back panel lacks Ceramic Shield, necessitating a case. Official silicone cases are currently the only options available for the standard iPhone 17.
Camera updates are a significant focus. Both rear cameras now feature 48-megapixel sensors, boosting the ultra-wide camera’s resolution from 12 megapixels. The main lens also supports 2x and 4x optical zoom, while the ultra-wide lens doubles as a macro shooter. Apple has introduced a “Bright” Photographic Style to enhance imaging quality.
The front-facing camera has been upgraded to 18 megapixels and includes Center Stage, which adjusts framing as subjects move. Its square sensor enables landscape photography without rotating the device, a feature receiving positive reactions from users.
Battery performance has improved, with Apple claiming up to eight additional hours compared to the iPhone 16. MagSafe charging now supports 25W, while Apple’s Dynamic Charger can deliver up to 40W, although it is not yet available in India. The A19 chip powers the device, providing efficient performance and complementing the larger battery for improved daily use.
The iPhone 17 starts at Rs 82,990, offering 256GB of base storage, doubling last year’s entry-level capacity. This adjustment makes it more cost-effective compared to the iPhone 16’s pricing for similar storage.
Early usage indicates the iPhone 17 addresses gaps left by the iPhone 16, including smoother scrolling, enhanced photography, and longer battery life. User experience over extended use will determine if these upgrades maintain their value over time.
