iPhone 17 Leak: Same Chip as iPhone 16, New Display and Camera
Apple may skip a chip upgrade for iPhone 17 base model, but leaks point to a larger display, ProMotion support, and improved front camera.

Apple is reportedly preparing to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025, and early leaks suggest the base variant may not bring a new processor. According to a research note by Jeff Pu of GF Securities, the standard iPhone 17 is expected to use the same A18 chip featured in the iPhone 16.
The A18 chip, built using TSMC's N3E process, is efficient and capable, but retaining it in the upcoming model could result in criticism similar to that seen with earlier generations. Apple previously used the same chipset in both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models, which received pushback for offering minimal generational improvements.
If Apple follows previous pricing strategies, the base iPhone 17 could debut in India at Rs 79,999. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 is likely to see a price reduction of approximately Rs 10,000 post-launch, potentially bringing its cost down to Rs 69,999. Apple has maintained this pricing pattern across the iPhone 13, 14, and 15 series in the Indian market.
Beyond the processor, several hardware changes are anticipated in the iPhone 17. One of the key upgrades may be the introduction of a 6.3-inch display, a slight increase from the 6.1-inch screen seen on the iPhone 16. Notably, this model could be the first non-Pro iPhone to feature ProMotion support, enabling a 120Hz refresh rate. This addition would enhance screen fluidity for both navigation and video playback.
On the front camera side, Apple is expected to double the sensor resolution to 24 megapixels from the existing 12MP setup. This could significantly improve selfie quality and appeal to users who frequently capture front-facing images or produce content. The rear camera is likely to remain at 48MP, without the advanced telephoto zoom capabilities available in the Pro models.
Battery specifications for the iPhone 17 remain unconfirmed. However, with a larger screen, Apple may increase battery capacity beyond the 3,582mAh unit used in the iPhone 16 Pro.
In essence, the iPhone 17 base model appears to focus on feature enhancements rather than a processor upgrade. While this approach may not satisfy users seeking major performance boosts, the potential additions—higher refresh rate display, improved front camera, and possible battery improvements—may still offer meaningful value if pricing remains consistent.
