Apple’s annual product showcase set for September 9 is expected to introduce a new device in the iPhone 17 lineup, possibly branded as the iPhone 17 Air. Industry watchers suggest this model may replace last year’s Plus variant, bringing a slimmer form factor to Apple’s smartphone range.
Reports indicate that the iPhone 17 Air could measure 5.5 mm in thickness, making it the company’s thinnest phone so far. This would undercut the iPhone 6, which was 6.9 mm. The design focus appears to prioritize sleekness, with Apple aiming to present a device that balances performance and minimalism.
Leaks point to a single rear camera, expected to be a wide lens capable of offering 2x optical-quality zoom similar to the iPhone 16. Unlike the Pro series, this version may not feature telephoto or ultra-wide options.
Hardware specifications suggest the phone will be powered by the A19 chip rather than the A19 Pro, aligning it with the standard iPhone 17 in performance. Memory is likely to increase to 12GB RAM, a step up from 8GB last year, aimed at improving Apple Intelligence capabilities.
Analysts expect an aluminium and glass body for the iPhone 17 Air. If confirmed, Apple would be shifting away from titanium, which was previously offered in Pro models. The device is also tipped to feature the Dynamic Island on its front, maintaining design continuity with the iPhone 16 Pro.
Display size is projected at 6.3 inches, aligning it with both the upcoming iPhone 17 and last year’s Pro variant.
While official confirmation will come only during Apple’s September 9 event, the iPhone 17 Air could mark the first appearance of a new product name in the iPhone series.
