The standard iPhone 16 of Apple has once again taken the leading position in India for the second quarter in succession, as per the Counterpoint Research. The iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 17 models have also been surpassed in total sales of the iPhone series. In spite of the premium and newer models from Apple getting all the attention, the basic iPhone 16 still has the biggest number of users, which indicates that the demand is still strong for a device that offers both good performance and low price.
According to the data from Counterpoint, the iPhone 16 was the leading smartphone in India in terms of shipments during the month of September. Not only in the big cities but also in the small towns and cities, the phone was a top choice during the Flipkart Big Billion Days sale, where it was one of the most sold luxury phones in the event.
A research analyst at Counterpoint, Shubham Singh, stated, “For the first time, Apple entered the top five smartphone makers by volume in India in Q3, thus the country has become the third largest iPhone market in the world. The iPhone 16 kept its leadership for two quarters in a row, the demand from smaller cities and the rise in the sales of the Pro model both led to a higher overall average selling price of the models.”
The iPhone 16 continued to be a big success worldwide. The iPhone was the highest-selling smartphone globally in the first quarter of 2025 and Apple regained the number-one position for its base model after a two-year period. The device was in high demand in Japan and the Middle East markets, which was further supported by pricing and subsidy adjustments.
In India, the success of the model played a major role in Apple recording its highest revenue ever during the September quarter of 2025. Tim Cook, the CEO, singled out India as a “notable market,” and it was during the festival period when sales, easy payment plans, and a wider retail presence that he attributed the rise in sales.
The excellent selling of the iPhone 16 led Apple to momentarily exceed a $4 trillion market valuation, which was a remarkable event for the company. According to experts, Apple's ongoing commitment to India through its sales and manufacturing operations has eventually turned the country into a significant part of the company's global growth strategy.
