On March 17, Apple released iOS 26.3.1 (a) in the market as the first Background Security Improvement. The Apple tech explained that the update fixes an issue in WebKit, the engine that powers Safari and additional third-party browsers in iOS. The company also recommends that every iPhone user download the update.

If you have allowed automatic installation of Background Security Improvements, the iPhone will go for the installation update on its own. If you don't have automatic installs or if you wish to make sure your iPhone downloads the update, you have to follow up

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements.

After coming here, your iPhone will either say iOS 26.3.1 (a) is previously installed or you'll see a choice to install the update.

Apple normally notes when an update addresses a bug that has been developed in the wild. However, the company didn't indicate whether that's the case for this update; you must still download the update to ensure your phone has the most advanced protection.

Apple, in a post online, wrote, "Background Security Improvements deliver lightweight security releases for components such as the Safari browser, WebKit framework stack, and other system libraries."

Apple's latest iOS security update reminds me of the Rapid Security Responses that Apple earlier introduced in 2023. The updates were a means for the company to speedily deploy security fixes to devices. Both updates share the same naming meet-up.

The company did not immediately respond to a request to comment on any relationship between Background Security Improvements and Rapid Security Responses.
