Apple has released two separate iPhone updates: iOS 26.1 and iOS 18.7.2. Both releases focus on patching multiple security vulnerabilities and resolving software bugs, but only iOS 26.1 introduces new features. Users now face the choice of whether to upgrade to the latest iOS 26.1 or stay with the more stable iOS 18.7.2.

iOS 26.1: Security and Features in Focus

iOS 26.1 addresses a wider range of security issues than iOS 18.7.2. Apple has prioritized vulnerability fixes for its latest software, making 26.1 the stronger option for users looking for maximum protection.

Additionally, iOS 26.1 fixes bugs that emerged in earlier versions. Since the major release of iOS 26 a few months ago, Apple has patched early software issues, providing users with a smoother experience. Apple’s support for iOS 18 is not permanent, which means users may need to switch to iOS 26 sooner rather than later.

Among the new additions, iOS 26.1 brings “Background Security Improvements,” a feature that automatically manages security updates in the background. This ensures iPhones and iPads stay protected without constant user intervention, a crucial safeguard in an era of increasingly sophisticated spyware.

For users who prefer a conservative approach, iOS 18.7.2 remains a strong contender. The update patches approximately three dozen vulnerabilities, including critical issues in the Kernel and WebKit, keeping devices secure.

Another advantage of iOS 18.7.2 is that it avoids newer, sometimes divisive features like Apple’s Liquid Glass interface, which has drawn mixed reactions. Apple is expected to continue supporting iOS 18 with essential security fixes for several more months, allowing users to delay upgrading to iOS 26.1 if they prefer.

Jake Moore, global cybersecurity advisor at ESET, recommends upgrading to iOS 26.1 if your device supports it and you want the latest security and privacy controls. “It’s the safer choice for users who prioritize protection and want the newest system features,” he said.

For older iPhones or devices with limited storage, iOS 18.7.2 still provides robust protection. Most everyday users can rely on iOS 18.7.2 for continued security while waiting for the next major iOS release.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your device and security needs. Business users or those who handle sensitive data should prioritize iOS 26.1, while casual users or owners of older devices may stick with iOS 18.7.2 for now.

To update, go to Settings > General > Software Update and select the version best suited for your device.
