Apple’s iOS 26 developer beta 2 is now live, and among the most significant inclusions is a new Recovery Assistant — a tool designed to help users troubleshoot iPhones that won’t boot, without needing to connect to a computer.
This new addition allows users to diagnose and recover a malfunctioning iPhone directly, eliminating the need for a Mac or PC, which was previously essential for recovery operations.
Apple’s latest move brings the iPhone closer to feature parity with Android’s long-standing recovery options.
The second developer beta release of iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 quietly introduces Recovery Assistant. According to the beta documentation, the feature helps revive devices stuck during boot or experiencing OS-level issues.
Users can now run recovery checks and apply fixes directly on the iPhone itself — an update particularly useful for those who rely solely on mobile devices without access to computers.
This feature is also seen as an extension of Apple’s previous peer-to-peer recovery solutions, which allowed iOS devices to be restored using another iPhone or iPad. Unlike those, the new Recovery Assistant works independently.
Hints of this functionality first surfaced in early 2020, when beta code referenced “OS Recovery” — an early attempt at wireless system repair tools. Later, in 2021, references to an “Internet Recovery” mode sparked speculation about Apple enabling direct over-the-air system reinstalls for non-responsive devices.
With iOS 26, Apple is finally implementing this long-anticipated capability.
Android has long supported recovery and safe modes for system-level troubleshooting. Manufacturers like Samsung and OnePlus have integrated advanced diagnostic tools in their devices.
Apple’s new feature brings the iPhone experience closer to Android in this regard, minimizing reliance on external hardware for system recovery.
iOS 26 is currently limited to developer testing. A public beta is expected in July, followed by a full release scheduled for the fall. Recovery Assistant is included in the second developer beta, though Apple has yet to confirm when it will be available for all users.
