Indian Companies Ineffective at Preventing Nearly Half of Cyber Attacks

A report reveals that Indian organizations struggle to prevent nearly half of all cyber attacks, primarily due to 64 percent of cybersecurity teams being preoccupied with responding to critical incidents instead of adopting a proactive approach. The report, conducted by the cybersecurity company Tenable based in Columbia, highlights the need for improved preventive cybersecurity measures in Indian organizations, with 78 percent of Indian respondents acknowledging the need for more resources dedicated to prevention.

However, a significant obstacle arises as 71 percent of organizations prioritize IT teams' focus on uptime rather than patching and remediation. This misalignment results in a lack of coordination between these teams, a challenge identified by 43 percent of Indian organizations. The report is based on an online study involving 825 IT and cybersecurity professionals, with 69 of them from India, conducted in 2023. It further reveals that 81 percent of respondents' organizations rely on third-party programs for SaaS apps and services.

However, only 54 percent have visibility into these third-party environments, making it difficult to implement proactive security measures. Kartik Shahani, Tenable India Country Manager, emphasized the critical role of proactive security measures, stating that in the battle against cyberattacks, half the battle is already lost. The report sheds light on inherent structural and operational issues within Indian organizations, highlighting the misalignment in goals between IT and security teams, which hinders their ability to work together effectively toward a common objectiv
