After an exhilarating 18-day odyssey aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and his three fellow Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission astronauts are now on their 22.5-hour journey back to Earth. Having successfully completed over 300 orbits and traversed a staggering 1.3 crore kilometers, Shukla and his crew are expected to make a precision splashdown off the coast of California at 3 PM today.

The Axiom Mission 4, piloted by Shubhanshu Shukla, gracefully undocked from the ISS on Monday. This marked the beginning of their long-awaited return after a highly productive stay in low Earth orbit. By approximately 2:11 PM on Monday, Shukla and mission commander Peggy Whitson were fully suited and securely seated within their spacecraft, affectionately dubbed 'Grace,' which is now charting its course for a Pacific Ocean splashdown, as confirmed by NASA.

The meticulous hatch closing process, which commenced around 2:38 PM, was successfully completed by 2:50 PM. Following this crucial step, the combined NASA and SpaceX teams initiated procedures for depressurizing Grace, conducting rigorous leak tests and other essential checks before granting the capsule the green light for undocking.

At 4:45 PM, the spacecraft bid farewell to the ISS, signaling the official commencement of its 22.5-hour homeward bound voyage. Moments after the separation, a voice filled with anticipation, that of mission commander Peggy Whitson, radioed "Godspeed," conveying hopes for a safe and successful return to our home planet.

The nation's pride was palpable as Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh publicly welcomed Shubhanshu Shukla, stating on Monday, "Welcome back Shubhanshu! The entire nation eagerly awaits your arrival back home…as you begin your return journey, after successful undocking of #Axiom4."

Adding to the mission's significance, the 'Grace' capsule is not returning empty-handed. It's meticulously carrying over 580 tonnes of vital cargo, including the invaluable results of more than 60 scientific experiments conducted during their time in microgravity.

Ground teams at NASA are maintaining continuous vigilance over Grace, meticulously monitoring its trajectory. They will issue multiple "go" or "no-go" commands leading up to the critical de-orbit burn, currently slated for around 2:07 PM on Tuesday, July 15th. Approximately an hour after this burn, Grace will deploy its drogue parachutes, followed a minute later by the main parachutes, ensuring a controlled and precise descent. The highly anticipated splashdown off the California coast is set for 3 PM.

Upon splashdown, dedicated recovery teams will swiftly reach the capsule, performing immediate safety checks before carefully lifting it onto their ship using a specialized hydraulic cradle. The crew will then undergo preliminary medical assessments before being transported by helicopter back to land for further comprehensive medical evaluations, crucial mission debriefs, and essential recovery procedures.

Experts are already hailing Shubhanshu Shukla's 18-day mission as a monumental stride for India, particularly in the burgeoning field of space-biotechnology. Anil Prakash, Director General of the Satcom Industry Association-India, emphasized the mission's transformative impact, stating, "This mission, made possible through strategic private-sector engagement, showcases a powerful public-private partnership, transforming space research into sustainable biotech innovation." Prakash further lauded this achievement, remarking, "SIA-India applauds this collaborative breakthrough in propelling India from space exploration to global space-driven biotech leadership."

During his eventful stay on the ISS, Shukla engaged in meaningful interactions, connecting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, inspiring school students, and even establishing contact with ISRO centers using amateur radio, showcasing the mission's broad reach and impact.
