In early 2023, IgniteTech’s CEO, Eric Vaughan, took a startling step: he dismissed nearly 80% of his global workforce. The reason? Widespread resistance to adopting artificial intelligence, especially among technical teams. Despite substantial investments in AI training—such as reimbursing AI tools, offering prompt-engineering classes, and mandating “AI Mondays”—the pushback escalated to deliberate “sabotage” of the company’s AI push.

Vaughan, in a recent interview with Fortune, reaffirmed his conviction in the decision, candidly describing it as “extremely difficult” but nonetheless stating he would do it again if needed. He emphasized that the company’s dramatic restructuring paid off: by 2024, IgniteTech had launched two patent-pending AI products, completed a major acquisition, and recorded profit margins soaring close to 75% EBITDA.

Interestingly, it was IgniteTech’s technical staff—not marketing or sales—who resisted adoption the most, voicing concerns about AI’s limitations rather than embracing its capabilities. This resistance prompted Vaughan to opt for replacement over persuasion.

Supporting data reveals this is no isolated phenomenon. A report from AI platform Writer found that nearly one-third of employees globally have actively resisted or sabotaged enterprise AI initiatives, with 41% of millennial and Gen Z workers showing non-compliance behaviors.

Though Vaughan stops short of encouraging other leaders to replicate his strategy, he frames the mass layoffs as a reluctant response to deeply entrenched cultural resistance—not a blueprint. That said, the move underscores the growing importance of AI readiness in future-proofing careers and businesses alike.
