Microsoft has confirmed that official support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025, urging users to transition to Windows 11. While the company promotes free upgrades to the newer OS, many users prefer to remain on Windows 10 due to system compatibility or reluctance to adopt Windows 11’s AI-focused features.
For those staying on Windows 10, Microsoft is providing a one-year extension of security updates through its Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This initiative ensures security patches until October 13, 2026, giving users additional time to plan their upgrade or consider a new device.
Initially, Microsoft intended to charge $30 for ESU enrollment. However, the company reversed this decision following user feedback, making the updates accessible at no cost for a limited time. Users must act before October 14, 2025, to benefit from the offer.
Windows 10 users can enroll in the ESU program via the system settings:
1. Open Settings on your PC.
2. Navigate to Updates & Security, then Windows Update.
3. Look for the notification indicating Windows 10 support will end on October 14, 2025.
4. Click on the Enroll Now link to initiate the process.
If the option does not appear, ensure the device is updated with the latest patches and restart the PC. The ESU option was introduced in August 2025, so older systems may require updates to access it.
Once enrolled, users have three options to activate the extended updates:
* Microsoft Rewards Points: Redeem 1,000 points to cover one year of updates. Points can be earned through the Microsoft Rewards program.
* OneDrive Backup Sync: Syncing a Windows Backup with Microsoft OneDrive also grants free updates, though additional cloud storage may be required.
* Direct Payment: Users can pay $30 for the extended updates, which is the original plan for the program.
Microsoft advises selecting the method most suitable for the user, with rewards points being a practical option for those with time to accumulate them.
The ESU provides security updates only, without any new features or non-security enhancements. Technical support is limited to license activation and installation issues. After October 13, 2026, Windows 10 users will no longer receive any updates or support unless they upgrade to Windows 11.
This extension offers a practical bridge for Windows 10 users, allowing continued protection while evaluating upgrade options or planning hardware changes.
