How Do NRIs Pay at Indian Shops Using Paytm UPI From Abroad?
NRIs can now pay at Indian shops instantly using Paytm UPI from abroad. Link NRE/NRO accounts, scan QR codes, and send money without delays or forex charges.

Paytm has made it possible for NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) to use the Paytm app for UPI transactions with their international mobile numbers. This facility grants residents overseas to send money straight from their NRE or NRO accounts disbursement to the Indian receiver’s banks with no active currency exchange or third-party money transfer service going on.
The new feature is currently available to users in twelve countries, namely Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, the USA, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the UK, France, and Malaysia. NRIs can now make their daily payments through scanning UPI QR codes at shops, restaurants, or online with the money they sent from their family and friends in India being made available instantly.
The facility, which is being developed and supported by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is initially being made available in beta mode and will very shortly be opened up to all qualifying users. Paytm stated that this increase of scope is one of the ways they are trying to make the global Indian population a part of the Indian digital payments ecosystem.
Besides the basic transfers, NRIs are provided with the additional features of Paytm. These comprise the downloading of UPI transaction statements in PDF or Excel form, automatic classification of expenses, view of combined account balances, and an innovative AI-based service, “Paytm Playback,” which can compose rap songs from the latest transactions.
A spokesperson from Paytm commented, “Our aim has always been to create technology in India that is meant for Indians, no matter where they are. Letting NRIs use Paytm UPI through international numbers is a move towards maintaining the global Indian connection in India’s digital economy.”
In order to make the service accessible to them, NRIs are required to download the Paytm application, sign in with their foreign number, validate it through an SMS, and connect their bank account. As soon as it is configured, the payment can be done right away with no waiting time or currency conversion fees involved.
