Paytm introduced the personalized UPI ID option earlier this month, emphasizing its role in safeguarding user privacy while providing a distinct digital identity. According to a News18 report, Google Pay is preparing to roll out a similar feature. The custom ID replaces users’ phone numbers or email addresses with an alphanumeric identifier followed by the bank name.
Initially, Paytm’s feature was available only for Yes Bank and Axis Bank accounts. However, users have also successfully updated their IDs on HDFC Bank and SBI, according to Gadgets 360. At present, Google Pay has not officially enabled the option for personalized IDs, but the feature is expected to be available soon.
The launch of the privacy-centric feature coincides with recent updates by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which raised the maximum transaction value for both peer-to-peer and peer-to-merchant UPI transactions. Experts note that these changes enhance convenience and flexibility for digital payments across platforms.
Steps to Create a Personalized UPI ID on Paytm
Users who wish to use a personalized UPI ID on Paytm can follow these steps:
1. Open the Paytm app.
2. Tap the Profile icon in the top-left corner.
3. Navigate to UPI & Payment Settings and select “View” next to the UPI ID.
4. Tap the box labeled “Try Personalised UPI ID.”
5. Enter a custom ID or select one from the suggestions provided.
6. Confirm the selection.
Once completed, the new ID replaces the phone number or email linked to the account.
Although Google Pay has not yet activated the feature, users can navigate to the page by opening the profile tab, selecting their primary bank, and tapping on “Manage UPI IDs.” The interface is expected to be similar to Paytm’s personalized ID workflow.
