In a pre-I/O 2025 reveal, Google has officially previewed Android 16 and Wear OS 6—its next-gen software updates that promise a dynamic redesign, tighter security, and deeper AI integration across devices.

A Visual Makeover with Material 3 Expressive

Leading the transformation is Material 3 Expressive, Google’s latest design language that introduces more vibrant colors, playful animations, and refined typography. Android 16 will give users greater control over their home screens, widgets, and quick settings—making everyday use both visually appealing and highly customizable.

Wear OS 6 mirrors this design evolution, bringing a youthful, energetic interface to smartwatches that aligns with Android’s fresh aesthetic.

Security Gets Smarter with AI

Android 16 takes security to the next level with AI-powered enhancements. Google's upgraded spam detection model now identifies advanced threats like fake toll messages. New privacy controls allow accessibility permissions even during calls from unknown numbers—offering more user flexibility without compromising safety.

A standout feature is Key Verifier—a tool that helps users securely exchange encryption keys and confirm identities during conversations, directly targeting impersonation scams.

Google also announced Find Hub, a new device-tracking platform replacing the Find My Device network. It supports a broader range of devices and accessories with ultra-wideband (UWB) and satellite connectivity for precise, always-on location tracking—even without a mobile signal.

Gemini AI Goes Everywhere

Gemini, Google’s generative AI assistant, is now the default on Android and is expanding its reach. From Wear OS to Google TV, Android Auto, and the upcoming Android XR, Gemini will assist with everything from smart replies and reminders to real-time conversations and personalized content recommendations.

On smartwatches, Gemini will offer a more conversational interface, managing alarms and tasks. In vehicles, Gemini Live will elevate Android Auto with engaging, on-the-go interactions. For TV users, it will enhance content discovery with curated suggestions, actor bios, and trivia.

More about Gemini’s role in Android XR will be revealed at the Google I/O conference on May 20.
