Google Search gets AI Mode in India: Here’s how to activate

Google has begun the nationwide rollout of its AI-enhanced search tool, AI Mode, making it accessible to users throughout India. Initially available only to a small set of participants during its testing stage, the feature is now available to the general public with no sign-up required.

In an official blog update, Google stated that responses from early users have been encouraging since the English-language version was introduced. The feature is now appearing in Search results and the Google app’s search bar for users across the country.

During internal testing via Search Labs, Indian users reportedly showed strong interest in submitting detailed, multi-layered queries. Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product Management at Google Search, said users explored topics in more complex ways compared to global averages.

AI Mode enables users to input questions through voice, text, or image uploads via Google Lens. The feature supports contextual memory, allowing follow-up questions based on previous search history to deliver more personalized results.

This tool is driven by Google’s Gemini 2.5 language model. It draws data from sources such as Google’s Knowledge Graph and Shopping Graph to generate responses. Its ability to manage sequential dialogue makes it well-suited for queries that evolve over time or require clarification.

Examples include asking for indoor activities for energetic children during extreme heat and refining the request to accommodate limited space or toys. The system incorporates previous exchanges to deliver adjusted, practical suggestions.

To enable AI Mode on desktop, users can access the "Search Labs" section and toggle on the feature. Once activated, a new tab labeled "AI Mode" appears next to standard options like “All,” “Images,” and “News.”

At present, the feature remains English-only. Google has not announced a timeline for multilingual support.
