Google has launched a Battery Performance Programme for Pixel 6a users following reports of battery drain, overheating, and even rare fire incidents. As part of the initiative, starting July 8, 2025, all Pixel 6a devices will receive a mandatory Android 16 update that enhances battery safety and efficiency.

Only a subset of “impacted devices”—those crossing 400 charging cycles—will trigger the update’s battery-management features. A notification at 375 cycles alerts users before any changes occur. Once activated, users may notice reduced battery life, slower charging, or temporary shifts in battery-readout accuracy.

To support affected users, Google offers a free battery replacement at authorized service centers (walk-in starting July 21, 2025 in India, US, Canada, UK, Germany, Singapore, and Japan, with mail-in service in select regions)
