Google Pixel is revolutionising mobile connectivity with emergency satellite feature

Google's upcoming flagship smartphones, the Pixel 9 series, the highly anticipated Pixel Fold 2 and the rumoured Pixel Tablet 2, are set to revolutionise the mobile industry with a ground breaking feature: emergency satellite connectivity. This innovation comes through a collaboration between Google and Samsung, integrating Samsung's advanced modem technology into the Pixel devices.

Google previously relied on Qualcomm modems integrated into Snapdragon chipsets before transitioning to their proprietary Tensor chipsets, which are based on Exynos technology. Upon adopting Tensor chipsets, Google opted to incorporate Samsung modems into its Pixel line up, aiming to address issues such as poor connectivity and suboptimal power efficiency experienced with the previous modem line up. According to reports from Android Authority, the forthcoming Pixel 9 series is poised to feature a new modem, promising improved connectivity performance. This new modem will be paired with the upcoming Tensor G4 chipset, set to debut across the upcoming line of Pixel devices, including the Pixel 9, Pixel Fold 2, and alleged Pixel Tablet 2, marking a significant advancement in Google's hardware offerings.

Furthermore, this new modem, identified as 5400, will not only power the Pixel 9 series but also extend its compatibility to other products like the Pixel Fold 2 and the speculated Pixel Tablet featuring 5G connectivity. Software-level enhancements, including support for the 3GPP Rel.17 5G specification, are anticipated to enable satellite connectivity, enhancing user safety through an Emergency SOS feature accessible via the "Satellite Gateway" app. Despite these advancements, Samsung remains the supplier of the new modem, signalling continuity in the partnership, and the designation of 5400 distinguishes it from the existing Tensor G3 chipset, highlighting its upgraded capabilities.
