Google I/O 2025 Kicks Off Today: AI, Gemini updates & XR tech take center stage

Google is all set to kick off its annual developer conference — Google I/O 2025 — today, May 20. The two-day tech event will begin with a keynote address by CEO Sundar Pichai at 10 AM PT / 10:30 PM IST. Ahead of the event, Pichai took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his excitement, including a light-hearted photo with Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, captioned “Having a deep think…”.
Hassabis had earlier posted a fun teaser — a video of onions sizzling in a pan with the caption, “cooking up something tasty for tomorrow…” — to which Pichai responded with a flexed bicep emoji, hinting at some major announcements in store.
In another pre-event post, Nick Fox, Google’s SVP of Knowledge & Information, shared a photo alongside Elizabeth Reid, VP and Head of Search, with a visible countdown clock in the background. Fox, who recently took over leadership of Google Search in October 2024, captioned the post, "…I’m back! And just in time for I/O tomorrow!" Pichai replied with a fox emoji.
How to Watch Google I/O 2025
The Google I/O 2025 keynote will stream live via the Google I/O website and YouTube on May 20 at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET / 10:30 PM IST). Expect a roughly two-hour session, although no major Android OS announcements are anticipated this year.
What to Expect from Google I/O 2025
As reported by The Verge, this year’s spotlight will shine squarely on AI innovations. Google is likely to unveil new Gemini AI features for mobile devices, improvements to its Gemini models, and updates on Project Astra, an ambitious AI initiative.
Another area to watch is Extended Reality (XR). Google may offer more details on Android XR and its prototype smart glasses, which were briefly teased during the recent Android Show. With Samsung’s Project Moohan headset launch expected later this year, Google could use I/O 2025 to stake its claim in the XR space.
Unlike previous editions, hardware announcements like new Pixel or Nest devices are not expected at this I/O. Instead, the focus is firmly on software, AI, and immersive experiences — setting the tone for Google’s next phase of innovation.
