Google Gemini Gets ‘Temporary Chat’ Feature: Auto-Deletes Conversations in 72 Hours
Google Gemini introduces Temporary Chat, a new privacy feature that deletes conversations after 72 hours. Learn how it works and how to use it.
Google Gemini now offers Temporary Chat mode, auto-deleting conversations after 72 hours to boost privacy.

With the introduction of a new Temporary Chat mode, Google is improving the privacy features of Gemini, its AI-powered chatbot. This feature gives users more control over their digital footprint by automatically deleting conversations after 72 hours.
Gemini's Temporary Chat Feature: What Is It?
The Temporary Chat feature enables users to have conversations that will be deleted from the app entirely after three days, according to a report by 9To5Google. These conversations won't:
- Show Up in Recent Conversations
- appear in the Gemini Apps Activity
- be applied to customize responses or train AI models.
The goal of this action is to increase user privacy and transparency. According to Google, the feature allows users to choose which conversations to preserve while allowing others to disappear completely.
No personalization is a trade-off.
Although the feature increases privacy, there is a catch. Gemini is unable to provide individualized experiences with Temporary Chat since conversations are not saved. Rather than being customized to the user's preferences, the responses will be more general.
How to Use Gemini's Temporary Chat
Users must do the following to test the feature:
- Get the most recent version of the Gemini app by opening it.
- Tap the hamburger menu in the upper left corner of the conversation window.
- Choose the newly added chat option that has a message box icon.
- To initiate a temporary chat session, tap on it.
After that, users are free to chat without worrying about leaving a trace in Recent Activity because the conversation will automatically end after 72 hours.
Why It Matters
With rising concerns about AI chat privacy, Google’s new update positions Gemini as a strong competitor against other chatbots. While features like this improve user trust, they also highlight the ongoing trade-off between privacy and personalization.
