Google has begun deploying a mandatory Android 16 update to Pixel 6a users globally in an effort to mitigate growing concerns over battery safety, following a string of reports involving overheating and swelling batteries.
The update, which becomes compulsory for all Pixel 6a devices starting today, is designed to curb overheating incidents by adjusting charging behavior and limiting battery capacity on affected units.
The decision follows several alarming user accounts, primarily posted on Reddit, detailing spontaneous fires and battery malfunctions. One user recounted waking up to a "fireball" after their Pixel 6a, which was charging overnight, ignited. Another described hearing a loud noise and detecting a burning odor before throwing their overheating device onto a tiled floor to prevent further damage.
To address these risks, Android 16 introduces a software safeguard that activates once a device reaches 400 full charge cycles. Google defines a charge cycle as the usage and recharging of 100% of battery capacity, not necessarily in a single session.
Once the cycle threshold is met, the system will reduce the phone's battery capacity and slow charging speeds to minimize risk. Affected users will be alerted when their device approaches 375 charge cycles, giving them notice before the limitations are implemented.
Only select Pixel 6a units — those determined to be vulnerable — will have these restrictions enforced. Google has not disclosed the specific criteria for identifying impacted devices.
If a device is flagged, the owner may qualify for a free battery replacement. Google will begin offering battery replacements from July 21 via both walk-in and mail-in service centers across the U.S., U.K., Canada, India, Germany, Japan, and Singapore.
However, the replacement offer is subject to inspection. Devices showing signs of physical damage, liquid exposure, or out-of-warranty issues such as cracked screens may be excluded or require additional fees.
This development follows earlier battery-related issues affecting other Pixel models. In May, similar reports emerged regarding battery swelling in the Pixel 7A. Earlier this year, the Pixel 4a also received an update that limited battery functionality to address overheating concerns, with affected users offered repair services or store credits.
Google encourages Pixel 6a owners to install the Android 16 update immediately and check their eligibility for support if symptoms of battery distress are observed.
