Foldable smartphones are gaining wider adoption in 2025 as prices begin to decrease and hardware stability improves. Devices that were previously fragile, heavy, and costly are now approaching mainstream usability.

Current foldable options include clamshell models such as the Motorola Razr 60 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7. The Razr 60 Ultra offers a 4-inch cover display capable of running apps and managing messages, while the Z Flip 7 focuses on build quality and durability. Battery performance has improved across both models, allowing full-day use without frequent charging.

Larger book-style foldables have also progressed this year. Oppo’s Find N5 introduced a slim 4.2mm folded design, while Samsung followed with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, measuring 4.2mm unfolded and 8.9mm folded and weighing 215 grams. Both models provide all-day battery life, upgraded cameras, and improved screen designs with reduced crease visibility.

Honor launched the Magic V5, currently the thinnest foldable at 4.1mm folded and 8.8mm unfolded, equipped with a 5,820mAh battery, fast charging, and multiple rear cameras. Google plans to release the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which will include IP68 dust and water resistance, marking the first fully water-resistant foldable device.

Samsung is preparing a tri-fold device, first teased at Galaxy Unpacked in January. The phone will include three segments: a cover screen for basic tasks, a foldable main display, and an extended screen that functions as a tablet. The Huawei Mate XT, a similar tri-fold model, has limited availability outside China due to lack of Google Play Services.

The Samsung tri-fold is expected to include a titanium and aluminum frame, the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, and up to 16GB of RAM. Global availability is anticipated, potentially including South Korea, China, the US, and other markets. Industry sources indicate a launch may take place between Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, though earlier rumors suggested a late September release.

Foldable phones in 2025 demonstrate significant progress in build quality, battery performance, and screen design. Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold device could expand the form factor further and reach a wider audience than previous models.
