Samsung has given the last great operating system update to its Galaxy S22 series, thus putting an end to the four years of OS upgrades that started in 2022. The phones will not get Android 17, thus, finishing their basic software development.
With the advent of One UI 8 that is based on Android 16, Samsung's updating obligation towards the S22 trio comes to an end. The analysts have opined that this support from Samsung has helped to put it on par with the global smartphone players.
With the end of the major OS updates, One UI 8.5 is expected to be the last one filled with features for the Galaxy S22. This version is likely to come with more functions and better performance as it would be built on the existing software. One UI 8.5 is expected to be first released on the Galaxy S26 series in early 2026 and then after a few months on the S22 devices.
The S22 series will continue to receive security updates even after the last OS upgrade. The devices are currently on a monthly patch cycle but will be moved to quarterly updates once they complete four years of use. The purpose of this support is to ensure the security of the device and the user's data for a longer time.
