Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 revealed a key update: the company’s AI-integrated Siri upgrade will not roll out until 2026. This announcement, directly impacting the iPhone experience, has sparked debate over the necessity of upgrading to the iPhone 17 later this year.
Apple confirmed during the WWDC keynote that its much-anticipated AI-driven Siri will not be available in 2025. The delay indicates the AI functionalities showcased previously will not ship with the iPhone 17 series.
Despite the setback, Apple is reportedly focusing on enhancing hardware this year. Rumors point to the inclusion of 120Hz OLED panels for the standard iPhone 17 models, in addition to new design tweaks and the possible introduction of an iPhone 17 Air variant. These additions could attract users with older iPhones, particularly those still using models from 2021 or earlier.
However, with no significant AI integration expected, users may find better value in the iPhone 16 series. The 2024 models—including the Pro lineup—already offer stable performance and software support, and prices are expected to drop when the iPhone 17 is launched.
Apple’s past trends also offer insight. According to recent industry reports, the standard iPhone 16 model was the top-selling smartphone in Q1 2025. This indicates that many buyers prioritize reliable performance and pricing over brand-new features.
Although the buzz surrounding a new iPhone each year brings consumer excitement, practical upgrades might not be compelling enough for users satisfied with their current devices. Apple will need to deliver significant hardware improvements and other incentives to justify the iPhone 17’s premium pricing.
In the absence of AI enhancements this year, Apple's focus shifts to physical improvements and design overhauls. The expected launch of iOS 26, featuring the new Liquid Glass design interface, may add cosmetic appeal but may not fulfill expectations set by last year's AI showcase.
As Apple preps for its major fall release, potential buyers face a crucial question: Is a new screen and design enough, or is it better to wait another year for the full AI experience?
