Apple's highly anticipated foldable iPhone may debut as soon as next year, according to various leaks and industry analysts. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has now revealed that Apple's first foldable device will feature two significant upgrades over its competitors, especially Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series.

Major Advantages Over Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold

The foldable iPhone is expected to address some of the main concerns users have with current foldables, particularly the crease visible when the device is unfolded. Gurman reports that Apple’s iPhone Fold will feature a “nearly invisible” crease, a major improvement compared to Samsung's foldables, which still struggle with visible creases despite yearly advancements.

Additionally, Apple’s upcoming device will have a “much higher-quality hinge”. Earlier this year, tipster Instant Digital claimed that Apple might introduce a revolutionary liquid metal hinge made from amorphous alloy (metallic glass). This advanced hinge design is said to be more durable and allow the device to lie flatter when closed.

In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is set for a major upgrade, is reportedly addressing the crease problem, with Samsung Display working on technology that could eliminate the crease altogether. However, it’s still uncertain whether the new model will feature this improvement this year or in the next generation.

Pricing and Features

Gurman notes that the iPhone Fold will be marketed as a premium high-end device rather than a niche offering. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also supports this, predicting a release between 2026 and 2027 with a price tag ranging from $2,000 to $2,500.

In terms of specifications, the foldable iPhone is expected to come with a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. It will feature two cameras, a front-facing camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID. The device is expected to be 4.5mm thick when unfolded and 9mm to 9.5mm when folded, closely mirroring the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s design.

A Potential Delay?

Despite all the excitement, Gurman adds that development could face delays, with some sources suggesting that the device might not arrive until 2027. This leaves room for further adjustments and improvements to the iPhone Fold’s design and functionality.

As the foldable smartphone market continues to evolve, Apple’s entry could shift the landscape, particularly with its promises of a superior design and improved usability compared to Samsung's foldable devices.
