After the reports of certain devices being targeted by spyware, the Indian government has come up with the warning for iPhone users. The alert through the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) brings up the security risks and at the same time provides tips to keep your data safe.

What Happened?

Apple has recently sent notifications to users in different parts of the world including India saying that their devices might have been aimed at the attacks of mercenary spyware. One of the ways the attackers try to get access to the iPhones is by linking them to the user’s Apple ID. CERT-In’s circular dated December 5 mentions that Apple is keeping a record of the users who are affected and at the same time the company is not saying anything about the attackers to protect the privacy.

What Apple Recommends

Apple recommends the users who get such notifications to act immediately and protect their devices:

  • Update the iPhone and other Apple devices with the latest iOS 26.1 version.
  • Update the apps which include messaging and cloud services.
  • Turn on Lockdown Mode which is a security feature designed to prevent the spyware from getting into the device and at the same time guarding personal data.

CERT-In is in full agreement with these recommendations and further encourages users to get technical help if required. The affected users can get in touch with the agency at [email protected].

Important Precautions

CERT-In in its warning to users also listed some actions not to be taken and these include:

  • Resetting the phone
  • Deleting apps
  • Restarting or updating the device before contacting authorities

Taking these steps could possibly destroy evidence or make it difficult for the tech experts to analyze the device.

Bottom Line

These attacks are directed at a very limited section of the public. However, this alert will serve as a reminder for all to be careful and keep their devices up to date. If you adhere to Apple’s guidelines and get in touch with CERT-In when necessary, you can very well guard your personal data and keep your devices locked safely.
