Huawei’s Next Foldable Could Beat Samsung to Market

Huawei is reportedly preparing to debut its second-generation tri-fold smartphone by September this year, according to early leaks surfacing on Chinese social media. The upcoming foldable is expected to feature significant upgrades in camera performance and processing power, setting the stage for another showdown in the evolving foldable device market.

Tipster @FixedFocus shared on Weibo that Huawei is eyeing a launch in the second half of 2025, likely ahead of Samsung’s anticipated entry into triple-fold technology. The timing could prove strategic, as both firms push innovation boundaries in foldable devices.

Sources suggest the new model—unofficially referred to as the Mate XT2—could be equipped with Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9020 5G chipset. Industry chatter also hints at a more efficient or customized version of the chip to enhance overall device performance, although precise specifications remain unconfirmed.

In terms of optics, Huawei is expected to integrate a multi-spectral camera system — a feature that first appeared on the Mate 70 series. Unlike standard image sensors, the multi-spectral module captures wavelengths beyond visible light, enabling better color precision and richer image data. This technology is reportedly being used in other premium Huawei phones, such as the Nova 14 and Pura X.

The tri-fold handset is also said to include the Red Maple Primary Color sensor, which aids in capturing more lifelike tones and detail accuracy, especially in complex lighting environments.

Despite prior speculation that Huawei might pause development of its tri-fold line, current leaks indicate otherwise. The latest hints suggest that the project is not only active but on track for a global unveiling in Q3 2025.
