Huawei Pura 80 Launches with Next-Level Camera Power in 2025

Huawei Technologies has introduced its new Pura 80 Series smartphones, marking the latest step in its strategic push to strengthen its premium handset portfolio through enhanced imaging capabilities.

The release comes as Huawei reclaims dominance in China’s smartphone market. According to Counterpoint Research, the company secured a 19.4 per cent market share in Q1 2025 — its strongest showing since 2021 — reflecting a 28.5 per cent increase from the same period a year earlier.

The Pura 80 Series brings advanced camera upgrades targeting complex photography environments such as night-time video, low-light portraits, and crowded concert settings. Huawei emphasized that these improvements were designed to meet the evolving demands of image-centric smartphone users.

Huawei’s smartphone business strategy continues to revolve around its two premium lines: the Pura and Mate series. The strong performance of last year's Pura 70 Series played a significant role in reinforcing its position in China's high-end segment.

Yu Chengdong, who leads Huawei’s device division, attributed the company’s product development achievements to a long-standing commitment to research and development. Huawei has spent over 1.24 trillion yuan ($172 billion) on R-&D over the past ten years. In 2024 alone, investment reached 179.7 billion yuan, accounting for 20.8 per cent of its total revenue.

Yu said this sustained investment has driven Huawei’s technological progress and allowed it to maintain competitiveness in multiple sectors. The company currently holds more than 150,000 active authorized patents globally.

Globally, premium smartphone shipments — defined as devices priced above $600 — grew 12 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, data from Canalys shows. Huawei recorded a 69 per cent surge in global shipments within this segment, climbing to third place worldwide with a 9 per cent market share, trailing only Apple and Samsung.
