In a significant legal setback for Google, the company’s Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones have been officially banned from sale in Japan following a court ruling over patent infringement. The Tokyo District Court ruled in favor of South Korean tech firm Pantech, which accused Google of violating a standard essential patent (SEP) related to mobile communication technology.

Announced by Pantech on June 24, the court's decision marks the first time a product has been banned in Japan due to infringement of an SEP, effectively halting the sale of Pixel 7 series devices in the country.

Upcoming Pixel Models at Risk

While the current injunction only applies to the Pixel 7 lineup, the legal battle could soon extend to other Pixel models. Reports indicate that Pantech is seeking to expand the ban to include Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 devices, which are still available via Japanese retailers and carriers.

Adding to the pressure, Pantech has also petitioned Japanese customs to enforce a complete import ban on all Pixel smartphones. A company representative told ETNews, “It is very encouraging that we’ve taken practical action in a Japanese court against a global company like Google.”

What’s Next for Google in Japan?

The implications for Google are substantial. Japan is a key market for Pixel devices, and a broader ban could jeopardize future sales — including those of the upcoming Pixel 10 series. Rumors around the Pixel 10 suggest significant upgrades and a refined Android experience, but if the dispute isn’t resolved, the launch may be delayed or scaled back in Japan.

As the legal proceedings continue, Google faces mounting pressure to either settle with Pantech or risk escalating restrictions on its flagship hardware in one of Asia’s most influential tech markets.
