Google has officially started rolling out Android 16, its latest mobile operating system, beginning with select Pixel devices. The launch comes a day after Apple’s iOS 26 announcement, highlighting Google's intent to push early and more consistent software updates.

Android 16 introduces updates in system design, accessibility, security, and device compatibility. It incorporates a revamped user interface built on Material 3 Expressive, promising a streamlined and uniform look that will gradually roll out across the system.

The first wave of Android 16 is limited to Google’s Pixel lineup. The following devices are eligible:

* Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a

* Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a

* Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a

* Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a

* Pixel Fold

* Pixel Tablet

Other manufacturers such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus are expected to push Android 16 updates in the near future, after integrating the OS with their respective custom UI layers.

Installation Process

Users with a compatible Pixel device can install Android 16 via an over-the-air (OTA) update. To do this:

1. Open Settings.

2. Go to System.

3. Tap on Software Update.

4. Check for updates.

5. Download and install Android 16 if available.

6. Restart the device post-installation.

Google’s Android 16 introduces new tools aimed at enhancing daily use, user safety, and app consistency across form factors:

*Live Updates: Users can now view real-time information like delivery or transport updates directly on the lock screen through a persistent display element, similar to Apple’s Live Activities.

* Advanced Protection: A security enhancement that notifies users when suspicious behavior or unsafe content is detected. It aims to protect against phishing, scams, and app-based threats.

* Adaptive Apps Across Devices: Applications now adjust automatically to suit different screens, including tablets and foldables, improving usability on larger displays.

* Visual Enhancements: Updates to icon shapes, font styles, and system settings design contribute to a refreshed, more unified UI.

* Battery Health Indicator: Available on Pixel 8a and newer models, this feature offers insights into battery performance and lifespan, assisting users in identifying when to consider replacements.
