EPFO Makes UMANG App Mandatory for UAN Activation via Aadhaar Face Authentication from August 1, 2025

Starting August 1, 2025, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) requires all members in India to generate and activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) exclusively through the UMANG mobile app, using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT).

With this update, employees can no longer rely on employers for UAN allotment or activation—except in special cases, such as international workers or citizens of Nepal and Bhutan, who are exempted.

How to Generate or Activate UAN via UMANG

1. Download the UMANG app (Android/iOS) and the Aadhaar Face RD app.

2. Open UMANG → tap “UAN Allotment and Activation” (or “UAN Activation” for those with an existing UAN).

3. Enter your Aadhaar number and Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and consent for Aadhaar validation.

4. Tap "Send OTP", verify with the received OTP.

5.Proceed with Face Authentication within the Aadhaar Face RD app.

6. If no UAN exists, a new one will be created and sent via SMS with a temporary password.

There’s also a feature to re-verify existing activated UANs via face scan to update EPFO records like your photo and address.
