India has ever since cycled through the implementation stretch with e-passports pertaining to the next-generation travel document ensured with security and digital features. The Ministry of External Affairs set this into operation as a pilot service on April 1, 2024, and it is currently being rolled out on a gradual basis across the passport offices in the country.

The distinguishing feature of an e-passport vis-à-vis a traditional one is this tiny gold emblem printed below the title on the front cover.

What Is An E-Passport?

An e-passport is a technical variation of the generally accepted travel document that embraces both physical and digital authentication. It contains a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna that are utilized to securely store personal and biometric data such as:

- Facial image

- Digital photograph

- Iris scan

It assures swifter immigration check-ins, locks away the chances of duplication and forgery, and follows global standards set by ICAO. Most importantly, an e-passport is not replacing but upgrading the passport.
