YouTube has announced its first-ever "Recap" feature that will present a personalized overview of video activities done by users over the past year. The recent tool, reported on Tuesday, is built on a concept akin to Spotify Wrapped, which encapsulates yearly music listening habits. This new feature only operates with content consumed through YouTube's main app and skims over YouTube Music's long-standing end-year summarizing.
According to a company's press release, "YouTube Recap keeps track of the content you were interested in all-year-round, showcasing the channels, themes, and viewing habits that are peculiar to your account."
The service opened for users residing in North America on Tuesday, and the global roll-out is set to happen later in this week. Getting the Recap feature took more than nine rounds of feedback and over 50 concept tests to reach this stage.
How to Access YouTube Recap
To display Recap, users can:
1. Launch YouTube on a mobile device, through the iOS or Android operating system, or on a desktop browser.
2. Log in to the account.
3. Choose the "You" option from the home page.
4. A banner saying "Your Recap is here" will show up just underneath details of the profile.
If the banner does not show, Recap can still be reached directly at youtube.com/Recap.
Recap provides a collection of up to 12 interactive cards that showcase the most viewed channels, interests, and monthly viewing habits of the user. The feature also gives a personality type based on a person's watch history.
The personality types consist of common ones like "Sunshiner," "Wonder Seeker," and "Connector," with rarer types like "Philosopher" and "Dreamer" being seldom assigned.
Heavy music streaming users will similarly get a view of their top artists and pieces of music for the year. As part of the Recap launch, YouTube released trend charts showing the top creators, podcasts, and songs of the year.
This new function offers a yearly overview of the viewing habits which will, in turn, push the users to think over their preferences and also tryout different kinds of content in the following year.
