Co-founder Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha to generously donate majority of his fortune

Nikhil Kamath, the co-founder of Zerodha and a billionaire, has become the youngest Indian to pledge his commitment to "The Giving Pledge," an esteemed initiative established by renowned investors Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. By joining this philanthropic endeavor, Kamath follows in the footsteps of notable Indian philanthropists such as Azim Premji, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Rohini, and Nandan Nilekani.

"The Giving Pledge" encourages billionaires to contribute a substantial portion of their wealth to nonprofit organizations. By doing so, Kamath aims to support causes close to his heart, including climate change, energy, education, and health. Forbes estimates his wealth to be around $3.45 billion, which he plans to utilize to create positive change in these areas. Additionally, Kamath has established his own foundation called the Young Indian Philanthropic Pledge (YIPP). Through YIPP, he collaborates with entrepreneurs, inspiring them to donate a minimum of 25% of their net worth to charitable endeavors.

In a letter expressing his commitment, Kamath expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join "The Giving Pledge" and emphasized his dedication to making a meaningful impact on the world. He believes that the foundation's mission of establishing a more equitable society aligns perfectly with his own values and aspirations. Furthermore, he eagerly looks forward to engaging with fellow members of "The Giving Pledge" community, fostering knowledge sharing, and collectively addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges.

"As a young philanthropist, I am writing to express my gratitude whilst joining the Giving Pledge. Despite my age, I am committed to positively impacting the world and believe that the foundation's mission of creating a more equitable society aligns with my values and aspirations," according to Nikhil Kamath's letter of commitment.

Kamath's benevolence extends beyond his personal commitment. Alongside his brother Nithin Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, the duo has gained recognition for their remarkable philanthropic efforts. According to the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022, their financial contributions increased by a staggering 300% to reach Rs 100 crore in the fiscal year 2021-2022. This achievement positions them as the ninth-largest individual donors in India.

Nithin Kamath, leading the Rainmatter Foundation, has been instrumental in supporting organizations and initiatives within India that actively combat climate change, promote a healthier environment, and uplift the livelihoods of communities associated with these goals. Through their combined efforts, the Kamath brothers exemplify a commitment to philanthropy that transcends personal success and inspires positive change in society.

"The Giving Pledge offers a great platform to learn, exchange ideas, and work collaboratively to address some of the world's most pressing challenges. I look forward to engaging with the Giving Pledge community and exploring new ways to create positive change.”

With Nikhil Kamath's induction into "The Giving Pledge" and the continued efforts of the Kamath brothers, India's philanthropic landscape is enriched, underscoring the potential for transformative impact on pressing global challenges.
