ChatGPT faces global outage: OpenAI responds

OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, is currently facing a global outage, leaving users unable to access the service via the web or app. Many users have also reported issues with the chatbot on the social media platform X. According to Downdetector, an outage-tracking website, over a thousand users have flagged problems with ChatGPT's functionality.

OpenAI Acknowledges the Issue

OpenAI has addressed the situation on its dedicated Status page, which tracks the performance of its services, including ChatGPT. The page indicates that both ChatGPT and its API are experiencing “Degraded performance.” A message posted by OpenAI states, “We are currently experiencing elevated error rates in the API. We are currently investigating.”

The Status page also includes two additional updates, confirming that OpenAI is actively working to resolve the issue but has not yet identified the root cause.

Timeline of the Outage

The outage reportedly began at around 5 PM IST, as per Downdetector. Since then, user reports show that 88% of individuals have been unable to access ChatGPT, while others are encountering difficulties with the website and API.

Cause of the Disruption

Although OpenAI is still investigating the incident, the exact reason for the outage remains unclear. Further updates are expected as the company continues to look into the issue.
