Zoho has introduced Arattai, a free messaging platform designed to serve as an Indian alternative to WhatsApp. The app supports text and voice messaging, audio and video calls, and is optimized for low-end smartphones and slower internet connections.

Arattai allows users to share documents, images, and multimedia content seamlessly. It also supports group chats with up to 1,000 participants and includes dedicated channels for focused discussions. Zoho positions the app as a secure communication tool developed for Indian users, emphasizing privacy and control over user data.

The name “Arattai” comes from Tamil, meaning casual conversation or chat, reflecting the app’s focus on simple and accessible communication. Zoho has assured users that the platform does not share information with third parties, and all data is stored in India.

Android users can download the app from Google Play or the official Arattai website. iPhone users can access it through the App Store, ensuring the developer is verified as Zoho Corporation. Third-party downloads are not recommended to avoid security risks.

After installation, users select their country, enter a phone number, and verify it with a one-time password (OTP). Permissions for contacts, microphone, camera, and notifications are required to enable full functionality. Users can set a profile name and picture for identification by contacts.

Key Features of Arattai

1. Meetings – The app offers video calling functionality comparable to Zoom and Google Meet, allowing users to start instant calls, join ongoing sessions, or schedule future meetings. A record of past and upcoming meetings is accessible within the app.

2. Pocket – This private space lets users save notes, media, and reminders, separate from regular chats. The feature uses end-to-end encryption for secure storage.

3. No AI Integration – Unlike WhatsApp and other global platforms that use AI tools, Arattai does not include AI features, keeping the user experience straightforward without automated suggestions.

4. No Ads – Arattai operates without advertisements, and user data is not monetized. While voice and video calls are fully encrypted, text messages do not have complete end-to-end encryption.

5. Mentions – Similar to Slack, this feature collects all messages referencing a user, making it easier to track conversations and notifications.
