Apple’s iPhone 17 series has largely earned positive feedback, but the Pro models have faced scrutiny over durability concerns. Reports indicate that the all-metal unibody design of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max is prone to scratches, particularly around the MagSafe charging area, prompting worries about long-term wear.

Bloomberg reports that Apple has implemented a solution to tackle scratches observed on iPhone 17 units in retail stores. Earlier claims suggested that old MagSafe chargers caused these marks, which Apple maintained were material deposits rather than actual scratches.

According to the report, Apple has instructed store employees to adopt a new cleaning procedure for iPhone 17 and iPhone Air devices. The process involves adding a small amount of a salt-based substance to the standard cleaning solution. This measure is intended to remove residual material deposits left by MagSafe chargers. Apple has not publicly commented on this new protocol.

Experts note that the instruction only applies to material deposits related to MagSafe use. Wear and tear reported by some early iPhone 17 Pro users remains a separate concern. Apple maintains that the aluminium unibody of the Pro models meets industrial durability standards and that minor scuffs are expected during regular usage.

In addition to cleaning protocols, some retail shoppers have observed Apple placing silicone rings on MagSafe chargers. These rings may help prevent material deposits from transferring to the phone’s back panel, although Apple has not confirmed this step.

Pro users continue to monitor the situation, with many recommending protective cases to reduce visible wear. This year, Apple introduced TechWoven cases designed to offer improved durability compared to the previous FineWoven series.
