Apple is preparing to introduce the third generation of its Watch SE during the company’s “Awe Dropping” event next week, where the iPhone 17 series will headline the announcements. The SE refresh comes more than two years after its last update, with Apple expected to position the device as its entry-level smartwatch.
The Apple Watch SE 3 is expected to shift to the design language first seen on the Series 7. Apple may drop the current 40mm and 44mm formats in favor of slightly larger 41mm and 45mm cases, offering display sizes of 1.6 inches and 1.8 inches. The change would bring the SE model visually closer to Apple’s premium watches.
At the core of the update is the new S11 chip, the same processor anticipated to drive the Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3. The S11 architecture is based on Apple’s S9 and S10 platforms but represents a clear step forward from the S8 chip used in the current SE. The processor is expected to enable smoother performance, support for on-device Siri, and gesture controls such as double tap. Storage upgrades could also follow.
Health-tracking features are expected to remain limited compared with Apple’s higher-end models. ECG and blood oxygen monitoring are unlikely to appear in the SE 3, but Apple may expand capabilities through software by activating sleep apnea detection. The device could also move to the third-generation optical heart sensor, a component that debuted with the Series 7.
Apple had reportedly tested a lower-cost plastic shell for the SE, similar in approach to the iPhone 5c. Those plans were later scaled back, with internal reports citing design concerns and limited cost savings. The SE 3 is therefore expected to continue with an aluminum build.
Pricing is expected to remain unchanged, keeping the line positioned for younger buyers and families. The current SE starts at $249 for the smaller case and $279 for the larger one.
Apple will confirm full details during its September 9 event. Pre-orders are likely to begin on September 12, with retail availability set for September 19.
