The latest iPhone 17 lineup has completely changed and improved the selfie experience in a way never before done by Apple. They have upgraded the front camera to a level where the news goes beyond minor changes.
The TrueDepth camera system first appeared with the iPhone X, and since then Apple has mainly focused on the rear Pro cameras; front-facing lenses obtained only minor improvements. The situation has changed with the advent of iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, which together host among others, a feature previously seen only in the most expensive phones, iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
The newly released iPhone 17 series, which consists of four models, has the front camera with a new sensor that is coming up with no less than 18MP resolution. The new front camera sensor goes along with the main, which has a maximum count of pixels at 12MP, increasing resolution to 18MP for the first time after the iPhone 11.
This enhancement certainly means more crisp images along with less noise and a chance to crop the pictures more without losing the important parts of the picture. And who wouldn’t be happy with sharper selfies straight from the phone, regardless of whether they take pictures in the regular portrait and landscape formats or not?
What’s more, Apple has also come up with a solution to one of the limitations that have been bothering users for a long time regarding taking group selfies. The front camera of the iPhone 17 now has a square sensor and is able to switch the framing style automatically just like a landscape does when the phone is held in portrait mode. In addition, iOS supports two zoom levels, and users can manually override the camera’s automatic choices to customize the framing according to their liking.
The Center Stage that used to be available for use only on iPads and some Mac computers is now accessible on the iPhone 17 front camera as well. The Center Stage is the feature that keeps people in the middle of the frame while they are on video calls or taking selfies, making the adjustment automatically as people move. Besides, the camera app allows users to choose whether they want auto-zoom, auto-rotate, or manual control so that it fits their usage.
