In 2027, Apple will unveil a fresh lineup of iPhones, among which a limited edition model will be present to mark the 20th anniversary of its iconic product. The tech giant is believed to be bringing forth the iPhone 20 along with the iPhone 18e in the first half of the year, which points to a change in both the naming and the releasing of the devices.
The decision to leapfrogging to the iPhone 20 is a significant break from Apple’s regular pattern of sequential naming. Omdia’s industry research, quoting senior analyst Heo Moo-yeol, reveals that the purpose behind the move is to pay tribute to the two decades of the iPhone range. Apple has strayed from its numeric sequence before; for instance, in 2017 the iPhone X was introduced to commemorate the 10th anniversary, and subsequently, the XS, XS Max, and XR models were launched in 2018.
In 2027, the prestigious September launch schedule of Apple might also undergo a change. The pattern has been that flagship iPhones have been introduced in September ever since the iPhone 5 was introduced in 2012. The 20 and 18e models are set to launch during the first half of the year, while other models—such as the Air, Pro, and Pro Max variants—are slated for later in the year.
The other major revelation could be that a second-generation foldable iPhone will be released. It is speculated that the iPhone Fold 2 could be available in 2027, subsequent to the first foldable iPhone launch in 2026.
Reports say that Apple may not introduce the standard iPhone 18 model at all, instead, the focus will be on the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, 18 Air, and the foldable. Confirmation of the lineup and specific release dates will be communicated in the coming months.
