Apple is advancing the development of its AI-enabled smart glasses, aiming for a commercial launch by the end of 2026, according to sources. The tech giant is positioning the device to rival Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses and Google’s forthcoming Android XR models.
Insiders reveal that Apple’s engineering teams are speeding up production schedules, with large-scale prototype manufacturing expected to begin overseas by the end of this year. The glasses will integrate cameras, microphones, and speakers to facilitate hands-free interaction through Siri voice commands.
Key features will include the ability to handle phone calls, control music, provide real-time language translation, and deliver step-by-step navigation. These capabilities align closely with those offered by Meta’s smart eyewear but are said to feature improved build quality.
Initially identified internally as project N50 and now falling under the broader N401 initiative, Apple’s glasses mark a strategic move into AI-enhanced wearable technology amid growing competition. This push coincides with OpenAI’s recent announcement of a partnership with former Apple design head Jony Ive to develop AI hardware products set for release next year.
While Apple has discontinued plans for a camera-equipped Apple Watch set for 2027, it continues to develop AirPods with camera features, maintaining a strong focus on the smart glasses project.
The device will be powered by a custom Apple chip, with mass production expected to commence next year, as previously reported by Bloomberg. Although the current iteration highlights AI functions, Apple’s long-term objective remains augmented reality glasses capable of overlaying digital content — a technology still years away from market readiness.
