Apple May Revive Bumper Case With iPhone 17 Air, Last Seen on iPhone 4 in 2010

Apple is reportedly planning to reintroduce the iconic bumper case with the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to launch in September 2025 alongside the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup.

The iPhone 17 Air, rumored to replace the Plus model, is tipped to be Apple’s slimmest iPhone yet, measuring just 5.5mm in thickness. While its ultra-thin design is expected to be a major highlight, it also raises concerns about durability. Users may hesitate to put such a sleek device into a bulky case that adds thickness, creating a challenge for Apple to balance protection with design.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been testing a new bumper-style case that surrounds the edges of the iPhone without covering the back. This design is reminiscent of the iPhone 4 bumper case introduced in 2010 during the “Antennagate” controversy. The bumper provided corner and edge protection while maintaining the phone’s slim profile.

If true, this would be a strategic move for the iPhone 17 Air, allowing users to protect their devices from accidental drops without hiding the design. It would also serve as a nostalgic throwback for long-time iPhone fans.

Additionally, reports suggest that Apple may also bring back a battery case option for the iPhone 17 Air. Apple previously offered battery cases for older models, like the iPhone 11, before switching to the MagSafe Battery Pack for newer devices — a product that has since been discontinued.

While Apple has not confirmed these developments, Gurman’s track record with Apple leaks suggests the bumper case could indeed make a comeback. The official reveal is expected at Apple’s September 2025 launch event.
