Apple iPhone 16e takes on android giants, replaces SE Series

Apple has officially retired the iPhone SE lineup with the launch of its latest and most affordable model—the iPhone 16e. This move marks the end of the SE era, which served as a gateway for first-time Apple users seeking a budget-friendly entry point into the iOS ecosystem.
With the iPhone 16e, the Cupertino-based tech giant aims to capture a broader consumer base while facing stiff competition from Android rivals dominating the mid-range smartphone market. According to Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint, the SE series played a crucial role in expanding Apple's reach. "The SE series has been one of the entry points for many first-time Apple users. It gained popularity among those who preferred a smaller form factor without the high-end features of flagship models," he noted.
Apple’s decision to phase out the SE mirrors its earlier discontinuation of the iPhone mini. The iPhone 16e, however, seeks to fill the gap with a competitive price point while offering a more modern design and enhanced performance. This strategy reflects Apple’s focus on attracting users who may have otherwise opted for affordable Android devices.
Despite its affordability, the iPhone 16e will need to carve out its place in a smartphone market where Android brands offer advanced features at competitive prices. Apple is banking on its brand loyalty and ecosystem integration to make the 16e a compelling option for new users and those upgrading from older models.
As Apple shifts its focus away from compact, lower-cost devices like the SE and mini, the iPhone 16e stands as a bold attempt to maintain its foothold in the ever-competitive mid-range smartphone landscape.
