Apple is set to bring a major desktop feature to iPhones with the rollout of iOS 26. The update, scheduled for release this September, introduces a new native app named "Preview," designed to streamline document handling on mobile devices.
Borrowing its name from the long-standing Mac application, the new Preview app will allow iPhone and iPad users to open, view, and edit PDFs and images stored on iCloud, on the device, or sourced from files.
Users will be able to navigate through PDF files and apply changes such as resizing, rotating, and marking up images or documents directly in the app. A document scanner is integrated, making it easier to digitize papers instantly. The AutoFill tool built into the app simplifies the process of filling out digital forms. In addition, users can generate new images using content copied to the clipboard or start fresh from the app itself.
Unlike the Mac version, the interface follows the document browser layout first seen in iOS 18, matching the design language found in Apple’s Pages and Keynote apps. This keeps the experience consistent across platforms while enhancing file accessibility on iPhones.
With iOS 26, selecting a PDF or image within the Files app automatically launches the new Preview app, mirroring how macOS handles files with the Preview utility.
