Apple Chooses Tata to Handle iPhone Repairs, Manufacturing in India

Apple has officially appointed India’s Tata Group to manage service and repair operations for iPhones and MacBooks across the country, further embedding the Indian conglomerate into the U.S. tech giant’s growing domestic and export supply chain.

As Apple ramps up its expansion strategy beyond China due to geopolitical shifts, India continues to gain prominence as a manufacturing and service hub. Tata Group’s role is no longer limited to production — it now includes the full after-sales service ecosystem as Apple’s repair partner.

Three Tata-run production facilities already function in South India, assembling iPhones and iPads. These plants cater to both Indian consumers and global markets, with a growing share of iPhone components now being sourced locally. This vertical integration supports Apple’s strategy to reduce its reliance on imports and diversify assembly locations.

Operations at a key iPhone assembly facility in Karnataka are expected to launch soon, once Tata Group receives operational clearance from ICT Service Management, a local subsidiary of Taiwanese company Wistron. The clearance will enable Tata to begin retail-level repairs and support services directly under Apple's oversight.

Apple’s growth in India is mirrored in national sales data. Counterpoint Research reported that 11 million iPhones were sold in India in 2024, boosting the company’s market share from 1 percent in 2020 to 7 percent. MacBook and AirPods sales are also rising, indicating increasing demand across Apple’s ecosystem.

India has overtaken China as the top shipper of iPhones to the United States. According to recent trade analysis, shipments from India surged 76 percent over the previous year. With the growing preference among U.S. consumers for Indian-assembled Apple products, India has emerged as a key export center.
