Android phones to get auto-restart feature after 3 days of inactivity

Google is preparing to introduce a new security feature for Android phones that will automatically restart devices if they haven’t been unlocked for 72 hours. This upcoming feature mirrors Apple’s “inactivity reboot” that debuted with iOS 18.1 last year, where iPhones restart after three days of inactivity.
The auto-reboot option is designed to improve device security by minimizing risks from hackers, malware, and potential zero-day vulnerabilities. It’s also useful for people with multiple devices lying idle, ensuring those phones don’t stay exposed or outdated without a reboot.
Interestingly, when Apple introduced a similar feature, it stirred some controversy. Several law enforcement agencies reported challenges accessing suspects’ iPhones, which had rebooted and locked themselves before data could be retrieved.
Aside from enhancing security, periodic restarts can also help resolve minor software glitches and buggy apps, making the device run smoother.
The new feature is expected to roll out soon as part of an upcoming Android update.
