Google has introduced a new feature to Android that allows its users to change the position of the buttons on the classic three-button navigation bar. The feature is aimed at making it easier for Samsung users to switch to Pixel devices. Samsung's present configuration has the back button on the right side while the stock Android layout displays it on the left. So far, stock Android had not provided any option to alter this order, hence users had to either relearn their muscle memory or switch to gesture navigation.
The feature, which was first observed in Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2, consists of a "button order" menu whereby users opt for the earlier specified layout — Back, Home, Recents — or a reversed arrangement — Recents, Home, Back. The feature was initially concealed in the beta version, however, it has now been made available in the newest Android Canary build (2510). According to the latest tests, users can activate it by going to the menu: Settings > System > Navigation mode > 3-button navigation.
Even though the feature is active in the Canary edition, it is anticipated to pass through the Beta and later reach the Stable release. Google is not likely to roll it out along with the December update for Android 16 QPR2; however, it might be part of the Android 16 QPR3 update that is expected in March 2026. This update will not only include button reordering but also a new flashlight brightness slider which will allow users more customization options.
