Just a day after Apple’s iOS 26 launch, Google has officially begun rolling out Android 16, starting with its Pixel lineup. The update reflects Google’s growing push to speed up its software release cycle and expand its focus on user privacy, productivity, and interface consistency.

The first wave of updates will be available only to Pixel users, continuing Google’s tradition of giving its hardware early access to Android's latest version. Other major OEMs, such as Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi, are expected to follow with their custom versions of Android 16 later this year.

The current rollout covers the following Pixel models:

* Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a

* Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a

* Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a

* Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a

* Pixel Fold

* Pixel Tablet

Manufacturers outside Google will issue their versions of the software once they complete the integration of Android 16 with their own UIs and services.

How to Install Android 16

Pixel users running Android 15 on supported models can upgrade via a standard over-the-air (OTA) method. To initiate the update:

1. Go to Settings

2. Tap System

3. Select Software update

4. Tap Check for update

5. Download and install if Android 16 is available

6. Restart the device to apply the update

No cables or manual downloads are required, and the installation process will proceed automatically for most users.

What’s New in Android 16?

Live Updates on Lock Screen

Android 16 introduces real-time event tracking directly on the lock screen. Users can monitor services like ride arrivals, food deliveries, and more via compact, pill-shaped notifications. This allows for passive updates without needing to unlock the phone or open apps.

A new layer of digital security comes with built-in alerts for unsafe links and suspicious activities. The system proactively warns users against phishing attempts and malicious apps, reinforcing Android’s position on digital safety.

Android 16 enhances support for foldables and tablets by allowing apps to adjust automatically across various screen sizes. This improvement aligns with the growing ecosystem of Android devices that go beyond traditional smartphones.

The design update brings softer fonts, restructured settings menus, and reworked media controls. The changes support Google’s evolving Material 3 Expressive design goals, offering more visual clarity without overcomplicating the layout.

A feature long present in the iOS ecosystem, the Battery Health tool debuts on newer Pixels. It provides real-time diagnostics on battery condition, lifespan estimates, and alerts for potential replacements.
