AIC π-Hub to hold Techathon 1.0 to develop metal 3D printing tech

Mumbai: AIC π-Hub, a premier incubator supporting deep-tech startups, will be holding Techathon 1.0, a national-level event focused on developing innovative solutions for a low-cost laser-based metal 3D printer in May. The idea is to make Laser based Metal 3D printing accessible to all.

The event aims to foster creativity, encourage collaboration, and identify promising ideas that have the potential to make metal 3D printing technology affordable and accessible to all in India.

Talking to Bizz Buzz, Dr CP Paul, head AIC Pi-Hub, RRCAT, says, “Three key factors are essential for widespread adoption of metal 3D printing: accessibility, affordability, and scalability. We are actively addressing all three aspects at RRCAT through AIC pi-Hub.”

Currently, laser-based metal 3D printing machines can cost between Rs. 5 crore and Rs. 7.5 crore. Imagine if a student could create one for just Rs. 50 lakh! This would be a truly disruptive innovation, he said.

The event will be conducted in three rounds. In the first round of the event, the registration and concept submission will be accepted. The last date for the first round is May 03. Virtual presentation will be held in the second round which will be undertaken on May 16-17. The final pitch will be organised in the third and the final round which will take place on May 24-25.

Dr SV Nakhe, Director, RRCAT, says, “RRCAT has developed numerous technologies with the potential to significantly benefit humanity. Our mission is to ensure these technologies reach industries and ultimately, the common people, fostering self-reliance for India. We are actively working towards this goal through AIC pi-Hub.”

A short proposal, in around 400 words, outlining their idea/concept for a low-cost laser-based metal 3D printer has to be prepared by every participant The proposal should include novel ideas/designs, technical specifications, and a preliminary business plan/ outlook/strategy to commercialize the idea. It is encouraged to include schematic sketches/ drawings for better representation of the novel ideas/designs. Teams qualifying for Round-II will be connected to a mentor for the next round and will be provided with a participation certificate.

Techathon 1.0 will be open to a diverse range of Indian participants in a team of 2–4 members including engineering students (undergraduate and postgraduate), design students (industrial, product, mechanical), early-stage entrepreneurs and professionals working in related fields (mechanical engineering, materials science, laser technology). The age of all team members should be less than 35 years on May 3.
