OpenAI to Restructure Nonprofit Arm as Altman Pushes for AGI Aligned with Humanity’s Interests

OpenAI is embarking on a grand corporate change to closely follow its mission of building artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the good of all human life. Under the leadership of CEO Sam Altman, the shift will happen, the organization will become a public benefit corporation (PBC). The action is an expression of the company's desire to see the benefits of AGI scale across the world, driving technology whilst ensuring ethical and equitable use for the benefit of global society.

OpenAI Inc. is going to be among the major shareholders of the newly created PBC. The nonprofit's precise share will be determined with the assistance of independent advisers. A significant portion of the revenue from the for-profit arm will be devoted to funding AI projects in the public interest, keeping with the company's mission for socially responsible technologies.

Among the major causes of these firm makeovers is the rapidly expanding global demand for AI technology – including the OpenAI flagship offering, ChatGPT. "In our current state, there's two major downsides: We cannot offer the services at scale,” Sam Altman wrote. Lyle points out that with AI systems becoming increasingly sophisticated, demand for such tools will only increase.

"We have plans of building a brain for the world, making it easier for individuals to use regarding whatever their purpose," Altman stated in a letter for the employees. The new PBC model will enable OpenAI to scale more efficiently, its powerful AI tools being open to more individuals, fulfilling demand in the market, and continuous innovation.

The restructuring is a material shift in the manner OpenAI will be operating, enabling the company to grow more effectively while still keeping top priority to bringing AI for the common good. Although the PBC model allows for growth through equity, OpenAI Inc., the parent nonprofit entity, will maintain sole control over the for-profit subsidiary.
