OpenAI plans unified AI ‘Superapp’ combining ChatGPT, Codex and browser tools

OpenAI is working on a unified desktop “superapp” that will integrate ChatGPT, Codex and browsing capabilities to streamline workflows and boost enterprise adoption.
OpenAI is preparing a major product overhaul with plans to launch a unified AI “superapp” that will combine its key tools, including ChatGPT and Codex, into a single desktop platform.
The move marks a strategic shift toward consolidation, as the company looks to simplify its growing ecosystem of products and deliver a more seamless user experience. Over the past few years, OpenAI has rapidly expanded its offerings, resulting in multiple standalone tools catering to different use cases.
With the proposed superapp, the company aims to bring these capabilities together into one integrated environment where users can interact with AI across a wide range of tasks—from coding and content creation to data analysis and workflow management.
A key focus of the platform will be “agentic” AI capabilities, enabling systems to perform tasks autonomously with minimal human input. The goal is to transform AI from a reactive assistant into a proactive collaborator that can execute complex, multi-step processes across applications.
The initiative is also closely tied to OpenAI’s broader push into enterprise markets, where demand for integrated and scalable AI solutions continues to grow. By consolidating its tools, the company hopes to improve efficiency, reduce fragmentation, and enhance overall product quality for business users.
Internal restructuring is underway to support the transition. Fidji Simo, Chief of Applications, will lead the superapp initiative alongside President Greg Brockman, as teams are reorganised around a single, core product strategy.
The shift comes amid intensifying competition from rivals such as Anthropic, which has gained traction with developer-focused and enterprise-ready AI solutions. OpenAI’s new direction reflects a renewed emphasis on business adoption and long-term revenue growth.
In the coming months, the company plans to expand Codex with additional productivity features before fully integrating it with ChatGPT and a built-in browser. While the mobile version of ChatGPT will continue to operate independently, the desktop superapp is expected to become the central hub for OpenAI’s AI ecosystem.
The development signals a broader industry trend toward unified AI platforms that can handle multiple tasks within a single interface, offering users a more cohesive and powerful digital assistant experience.
